Introduction to 'Black Jack':
Black Jack is an unlicensed doctor with genius-level surgical skills, capable of performing seemingly impossible operations. He demands enormous fees from the patients he saves. Continuously questioning what it means to be a doctor, the value of life, and what is more important than money, Black Jack exposes the fear of death in his patients and the selfishness of those around him. He confronts society itself.
The manga series 'Black Jack' was published from November 1973 to October 1983, including both regular chapters and short stories, in the weekly shonen manga magazine 'Weekly Shonen Champion' (Akita Shoten).
Originally, 'Black Jack' was planned as a short-term series of about four installments titled '30th Anniversary of the Manga Artist Life: Tezuka Osamu One-Man Theater,' featuring characters from Tezuka's manga. However, due to the outstanding quality and positive reader response, the series continued for five years, spanning 229 chapters in a weekly format. Even after its completion in 1978, 14 additional chapters were created, solidifying 'Black Jack' as one of Tezuka Osamu's most popular and representative works.
