Ashinoko

Hakone's symbol, Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), is a dammed lake formed approximately 3,000 years ago by the steam explosion of Mount Kamiyama, which blocked a river.

The lake's primary water source comes from springs at its bottom, attracting people who enjoy fishing, picnicking, and hiking along the lakeshore.

Visiting Lake Ashi in the Morning

The former Hakone Port offers breathtaking views in the morning or evening when there is a high chance of seeing Mount Fuji along with Lake Ashi and the iconic red torii gate. Depending on luck and specific conditions such as calm winds, early morning visitors might be treated to the spectacle of "Upside-Down Fuji," a stunning reflection of Mount Fuji on the clear and tranquil lake surface.
