Hakone's Owakudani and Black Eggs
As a place that conveys the volcanic activity of Hakone to this day, Owakudani is an indispensable destination on the tourist route.
It is the remains of the explosive crater of Mount Kamiyama, formed by the last eruption of the Hakone volcano approximately 3,000 years ago. Even now, white smoke containing sulfuric vapor continues to billow from Owakudani, and its desolate landscape gives a glimpse of its past when it was known as "Daigoku," meaning "Great Hell." The name was changed to Owakudani in 1873 when Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken expressed concern, saying, "It's worrisome to have a hell in the place where Their Majesties visit for relaxation." I can't help but feel a bit regretful, wondering if it should have remained "Great Hell" to this day. Today, a "Tourist Center" has been established, offering opportunities for dining and shopping. The famous "Black Eggs," boiled in the acidic hot mud unique to Owakudani, have become a specialty and gained popularity.
Black Eggs:
This eerie sulfuric power spot in Hakone is a must-visit. The Black Eggs, said to extend one's lifespan by seven years for each egg consumed, are definitely worth trying.
